About the artist
Hi there! Thanks for stopping by!
My name is Janine Reid. I have been a maker and creator all my life -- name a craft and I have done it. From calligraphy and macrame, to felting wool on silk, to paper painting collages -- I have tried them all! I have taken courses in person and online in drawing, painting, felting, printmaking, mixed media, and watercolour. I have given courses in felting and paper collage. I have learned from experimentation and play. In my previous life I was a primary teacher, educator, published author and education consultant. I worked in Northern BC, Jamaica WI, Vancouver School Board and Simon Fraser University. I am a mother of 3 and grandmother of 4 wonderful kids. Since retirement I have been a founder and force of enthusiasm behind the Royal City Gogos, a group of 75 grandmothers and grandothers in New Westminster BC who fundraise for the Stephen Lewis Foundation's Grandmothers to Grandmothers Campaign. The SLF partners with community-based projects in 15 African countries in solidarity with African grandmothers caring for children orphaned by AIDS. Partial proceeds from the sale of my art and all of the proceeds from the art cards and felted scarves are donated to the Grandmothers Campaign. The Watercolour/Mixed Media Abstracts Paintings incorporate collage elements plus embellishments with a variety of pens and paint mediums. The painted paper collages I prepare all the papers myself by printing them, painting and stenciling them and using a gelliplate. The papers are torn or cut to make the design. The work is further embellished with pens, pastels and paint. My work is vibrant and often whimsical. It is naive and hopefully captures some of the spontaneity of young children's work. Felting on silk I use a process called nuno felting in which finest merino wool is laid out in a design on silk. Through a process of agitating with warm, soapy water, the wool fuses to the silk creating a new fabric. Classes on request... Join me! I teach classes in both paper painting and nuno felting. If you are interested contact me on this website and I will put you on a mailing list. Preparing the collage papers |
